My grandma Virginia Johnson grew up next door to John in San Rafael, She told us alot of stories about him, how handsome he was, He painted a picture of my dad Bill at alcatraz when he was a baby. My grandma took him there to visit John. John Paul and Baby face used to go to my great grandma Marys house to drink beer, She made it in her basement in San Rafael.

Sally Backman was my grandfather's sister. Both my grandfather and his brother were working on the Sausalito Ferry where Sally was a ticket taker during the early 30's. As a young girl my mother recalled thinking that Aunt Sally "always had the nicest clothes." This of course would have been when she was dating John Paul Chase. Mom also recalled having the FBI use the apartment next door to stakeout the Nelson gang when they were staying up the street. Sally has passed away and any information you have on her would be greatly appreciated.

I knew Johnny in the early 70's. Went to lunch with him and Warden Daly and Father Clarke several times. Heard lots of stories. These three men had become good friends. I last visited Johnny in the hospital before he died.

I too knew John when he was the janitor at my high school, and went to church services held for him when he passed. New for a couple years before I ever heard of his infamous history,...never would have guessed it, he was a verygentle and friendly old fellow!

I've had this old painting that I thought was of a president of the U.S. painted by a man named John Paul Chase dated 1943. I've tried a couple of times through the years to find out who this man might be. Just recently on the internet I finally found this web site and many more. And I now know that the picture is of the warden of Alcatraz prison from 1934-1948. I'm wanting to sell this painting. If interested please contact me at itsbarbinater@yahoo.com.
