I knew Johnny in the early 70's. Went to lunch with him and Warden Daly and Father Clarke several times. Heard lots of stories. These three men had become good friends. I last visited Johnny in the hospital before he died.

I too knew John when he was the janitor at my high school, and went to church services held for him when he passed. New for a couple years before I ever heard of his infamous history,...never would have guessed it, he was a verygentle and friendly old fellow!

I've had this old painting that I thought was of a president of the U.S. painted by a man named John Paul Chase dated 1943. I've tried a couple of times through the years to find out who this man might be. Just recently on the internet I finally found this web site and many more. And I now know that the picture is of the warden of Alcatraz prison from 1934-1948. I'm wanting to sell this painting. If interested please contact me at

I knew John while he worked as a janitor at St. Joseph's. We talked a great deal. I always enjoyed his company. When I knew him he was a gentle man.
